There are redcurrants and white currants. They are popular in desserts, on top of cakes and in baked goods. The milder varieties can be enjoyed plain. Their tart, sour flavour is extremely refreshing. In German-speaking countries, currants are named after John the Baptist, and are said to ripen every year in time for the Feast of Saint John, which falls at the end of June.
